ATAA celebrated 40th anniversary

This weekend, a large delegation from TACAM has attended the ATAA 40th Anniversary Conference in Virginia. The keynote speakers included Prof. Dr. Emre Kongar and (via video message) Amb. Şükrü Elekdağ.

Panels related to the history and rise of Turkish American associations along with the centennial celebration of Turkish Independence War provided plenty of new information for the attendees.

TACAM and Michigan delegation left an important mark in the conference. President of ATAA and our dear Vice President Gökhan Özalp was a speaker at president’s panel along with ATAA and TACAM past president Nurten Ural. ATAA Vice President and TACAM secretary Nilüfer Esen-Bilgin moderated a panel on the impact of Turkish national movement on current politics with the participation of Dr. Emine Evered of MSU and Dr. Paul Kubicek of Oakland University. Finally TACAM president Mehmet E. Yaya discussed challenges of local organizations in the last panel.

The conference followed by an annual gala with live music. TACAM received a plaque for its outstanding service to the Turkish American community. A big congratulations goes to Nilüfer Esen-Bilgin for winning the elections for the secretary of ATAA. She will be more involved with ATAA after spending 2 years as first Vice President responsible from the Mid-Central region.

Turkish delegation also had an opportunity to visit the Turkish House in Virginia, home to ATAA. The new property will allow ATAA to advocate more effectively for Turkish American interests.

The conference was a great event allowing the members to network, exchange ideas, and also have little fun. Amazing keynote speakers Dr. Emre Kongar and Şükrü Elekdağ make the event even better. Michigan delegation had great conversations (and pictures of course) with Professor Kongar. We are bringing few signed books to our Republic Ball for the silent auction.

Finally, we would like to remind all of you that like TACAM, ATAA relies on membership dues and it is our civic duty as Turkish Americans to support this umbrella organization. To become a member, you can visit
