We will be closing our long loved little shop in downtown Ann Arbor. Our
personal life especially our baby boy Burak does not allow us to keep the
shop running effectively. We tried to keep it open as long as we could
however we would like to keep our remaining power cells alive.

For those who do not know our shop; it is located in an historic concrete
archway built in 1929, similar to what we call passageway in Turkey. It is
between state and Maynard streets, several yards away from one of the
largest parking structures in Ann Arbor. The Arcade has really nice and
upscale shops and also nests Biouvac which is the largest independently
owned outdoor store. The arcade participates to Ann Arbor Art Fair, one of
the largest in the USA. So there has been quite a bit of foot traffic. There
is also a large number of people passing by during University of Michigan
football games and graduation ceremonies. We attract students visiting
parents, as well. What we sell; we primarily sell art pieces, handmade
textiles, and costume jewelry mostly from Turkey and other Turkish speaking
countries: really nice one of a kind ceramics, hand blown glass works,
framed art, felt ornaments and many more.

How does it work; our lease ends August 31st and we usually clean out our
inventory during the art fair in July. If you want an immediate take over so
that you can benefit from the art fair and students return in August we can
certainly cut a deal with the landlord. We are willing to transfer the name
and give you all the goods in the store, as well as all the equipment in the
store including our credit card machine. We have the dot com for the store
and you can also take it over.

Our help; we have been open for five years so we have so many devoted
customers all around the US and from other countries. Ann Arbor is a melting
pot of diverse people around the world and you will be happy to be a part of
this community. This is a socially interactive and fun business. You will be
amazed how many people are interested in Turkish culture and art. We will
provide you all you need to run the business as well as help on the product
supply plus anything related to simple accounting such as taxes (it is
really simple).

This position requires a minimum of 11 months per year residency in
Alanya, Turkey.

Position Summary
The McGhee Center is located in the city of Alanya on Turkey’s
Mediterranean coast. Today Alanya is known as a place with a rich
history with its well-preserved medieval castle and city landmarks such
as the Red Tower — making it an ideal setting for the study of Turkish
and Mediterranean civilization, culture and language.The McGhee Center
curriculum promotes active learning through excursions, travel,
community service, and the opportunity to interact with political,
cultural, and business leaders and local families. The focus on
interactive learning is reinforced by a low student-faculty ratio and by
a culture of communal meals where students are encouraged to interact
with faculty, guests, and one another as they are introduced to Turkish
and Mediterranean food culture.

The Director of the McGhee Center reports directly to the Director of
Global Strategies and works closely with the Executive Director of
International Programs, the Division of Overseas Studies, and the McGhee
Center Faculty Steering Committee to administer existing programs and
expand the academic and non-academic opportunities at the McGhee Center.
The Director is responsible for academic administration and program
development, student services, health and safety on-site, facilities and
staff oversight, budget oversight and implementation, and marketing.The
Director may also teach one course at the McGhee Center, depending upon
the needs of the program.

Minimum Qualifications:
Professional Experience: Three years experience in the administration
of academic/cultural programs overseas preferred. Must have experience
with undergraduates and undergraduate curriculum development in a
relevant area of academic specialization. Must be very familiar with
Turkish culture.

Academic: Depending upon the applicant’s skills, opportunities to
teach may be added to the current responsibilities. If so, a doctorate
is preferred in Turkish, Mediterranean Studies, History, Geography or
similar (applicable to the region).

Language Requirement: Fluent in Turkish and English

Summary of Position Accountabilities:
Below is a summary of the principle accountabilities for this
position. Additional responsibilities exist in each category.

Academic Administration and Program Development (35%)
The Director works with appropriate Main Campus staff and faculty to
develop a long term curricular focus for the McGhee Center, to guide
visiting faculty in the structure and design of courses, and to
design and implement academic programs and co-curricular programs,
including the community-based learning program. The Director
oversees all student evaluation mechanisms, in collaboration with
the Director of Global Strategies/ In collaboration with OIP staff,
the Director will also develop and implement new short-term, summer,
research and language programs for new populations including
graduate students and faculty; Seek funding opportunities for the
McGhee Center through the development of grant proposals that will
enhance not only the academic quality of activities at the McGhee
Center but also the financial viability: and represent Georgetown
and the McGhee Center by serving as a liaison between the McGhee
Center and local authorities, government officials and community
members in Turkey.

Student Services and Health and Safety (25%)
With the support of the on-site administrative assistant, the
Director will plan and implement all aspects of orientation and
program excursions. The Director will provide additional student
services including and cultural training, housing assignments,
cultural and social activities, student adjustment counseling,
medical, physical and legal issues, and conflict resolution. The
Director will communicate to participants applicable codes of
conduct and the consequences of non-compliance. In consultation
with OIP staff, take appropriate action when aware that participants
are in violation. In terms of health and safety, the Director will
secure appropriate medical and professional services and help
participants obtain the services they may need and assist in
resolving student health and medical issues as they arise. In cases
of serious health problems, injury, or other significant health and
safety circumstances, the Director will handle the crisis with the
support of the Executive Director and other appropriate Main Campus
staff.

Facilities and Staff Oversight (20%)
The McGhee Center is a historic property.In addition, the program
maintains a student residence in a separat e location. The Director
will oversee all administrative and facilities management of the
Center including , but not limited to, property maintenance and
restoration, general maintenance work at both sites, and cooking,
cleaning, gardening work. In consultation with OIP, hire, supervise
and pay the McGhee Center staff in accordance with local labor law
and established Georgetown practices for overseas
employment.Currently, the McGhee Center employs two support staff, a
cook, one cleaning staff member, gardening services, and local
faculty for the instruction of Turkish.

Marketing and Recruitment (10%)
The Director participates in the writing of promotional and program
materials, assists recruitment efforts for Center programs, and
represents the program at fairs, conferences, other “sending”
universities and other events accord ing to a schedule put together
by OIP.

Fiscal Responsibilities (5%)
The Director will work closely with the local accountant to insure
that payroll, contracts and tax requirements are met. In addition,
the Director will participate in the formulation of the program
budget; manage program finances and insure monthly reconciliations
are completed; maintain local banking arrangements, provide invoices
and following appropriate procedures for transfer of funds to the
program; and pay local program expenses onsite. Upon request, the
Director may be asked to engage in fundraising and maintain
relationships with benefactors in the United States and abroad.

Other (5%)
The Director will respond promptly to email communication and
communicate promptly and regularly with OIP on any student or
program issue. The Directo r will be available to OIP staff for
regular updates and phone meetings, with the minimum expectation of
a once a month call with the Director of Global Strategies. A
Director’s report at the conclusion of each session will be required.
The Director is expected to be on call for emergency situations
twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
