This talk deals with the imperial shifts from state-centered to localized strategies in schooling and administration in the late Ottoman era. In doing so, it employs the concept of governmentality as a framework for better analyzing and understanding the state of Sultan Abd ül-Hamid II.
“Poppies are Democracy:” Geographies of Eradication and Production in Turkey

Based on archival research and fieldwork, this paper identifies and employs a critical geopolitics approach to examine past and present symbolisms of the opium poppy in Turkey − images that equate strongly the crop with democracy and development.
