Looking forward to seeing everyone again soon – stay tuned for Father’s Day picnic at Kensington Park on June 17, 2007…
In an effort to honor our beloved country’s founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and to celebrate the day he declared as the “Youth Day”, TACAM invites all members of our community to a get together on Saturday, May 19th at 4:00 PM on TACAM grounds. This will also be a great way to meet and greet the new board members and a chance for you to discuss your ideas.
There will be a bonfire set-up for celebration, where you can enjoy live percussion by Murat Ulasir, so bring your own musical instrument to join him. We will also have sports activities set-up for our young friends, along with kids’ corner, where they can enjoy face painting and story reading. TACAM will also provide Turkish style hot dogs, Russian salad, smores and soft drinks – please bring along your favorite side dish to share with the group.
The Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day, (Atatürk’ü Anma Gençlik ve Spor Bayramı), is an annual Turkish national holiday celebrated on May 19 to memorialize the start of the Turkish War of Independence. May 19, 1919 is the day Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who would become independent Turkey’s first president, landed on the main peninsula of Turkey to begin leadership of the liberation effort. In early 1920, Kemal convened the first Turkish Grand National Assembly in Ankara, and by 1922 all of Anatolia was freed from foreign rule. The independent Republic of Turkey was declared a year later. During the course of his term as president, Atatürk himself proclaimed May 19 as “Youth and Sports Day.” In the aftermath of Atatürk monumental legacy, the day serves to honor the country’s founder.
88 years ago on this day, Atatürk planted the seeds for a free Turkey — this is a day of commemoration of Kemal Atatürk, the “Father of Turkey”, and the commemoration of the beginning of national liberation movement, so let’s be proud and let’s unite for this celebration…
