We commemorated Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, his comrades, and those fallen during the independence war on the centennial anniversary of the Great Offensive (Büyük Taarruz) on August 26-30, 1922. During this last battle of independence war, Turkish forces under the command of Mustafa Kemal defeated the occupying Greek forces, effectively ending the three years of wars and suffering in Anatolia.
The victory lead to establishment of modern Turkiye, declaration of republic followed by signing of Lausanne Treaty and integration of Turkiye to the modern world with the transformative reforms.
On this day, after 100 years later, Turkish Michiganders join the rest of Turks around the world remembering and recognizing this important turning point for a nation with great gratitude. Approximately 50 celebrated this day with a special program on last Sunday followed by a social where people enjoyed the friendly conversations in our cultural center. Our high school chapter made us all proud with their short presentation of the day too.
30 Agustos Zafer Bayramımız kutlu olsun!
